About the Artist
Hi, I'm Kyson Teo. Hailing from Batu Pahat, Johor, Malaysia, I graduated from Taipei Physical Education College (TPEC, currently University of Taipei, Tian-mu campus) majoring in dance study. Having a passion in performing art as a contemporary dancer, I also work as a choreographer and dance instructor.
Currently, I'm one of the dance artists of Kwang Tung Dance Company. I have actively involved in the company's productions since 2017. That aside, I'm also an independent artist with interest of collaborating with others to create works related to local community. Latest examples worth mentioning are site-specific full-length work "Dancing at No. 26" in Batu Pahat in 2019 and "Where Souls Meet" in Kluang in 2020.
During my time in Taiwan, I performed in TPEC’s annual dance performances, the Yosakoi Soran Festival in Japan, the 4th Tsai Jui-Yueh Dance Festival in Taiwan, etc. There, I have the opportunity to work with Chamber Ballet Taipei, Taipei Royal Ballet, Century Contemporary Dance Company, Off-Nibroll Dance Company (Japan) and WC Dance Theatre for dance performances, choreography and collaboration.
In 2015, I have the opportunity to be a guest dancer for Ergao Dance Production in China and performed in Wuzhen Theatre Festival, Macau City Fringe Festival and Guangdong Dance Festival. Formerly a dancer of DPAC Dance Company under the guidance of JS Wong and performed in several international dance festivals in Malaysia, Singapore, Japan and India, I'm now a dance artist of Kwang Tung Dance Company.
After my experiences in different countries, I presented my observation of the service cultures of different countries in choreography of "Service First" in various versions in Kuala Lumpur, Taipei and Tokyo between 2010 and 2011. I'm proud to have won the Excellence Prize in the National Chinese Dance Festival 2013 & 2014 with my creation "Raining Night & the Moonlight" and "Link". I was also one of the selected artists in d’Next Artist Project 2015 and have the opportunity to present my choreography "Trace".
Although my passion is of that of a contemporary dancer, I do coach and teach dancing of various genres in schools and dance studios. Under my portfolio as a dance instructor since 2011, I have experience in contemporary (of course, I live and breathe with it), Chinese folk dance, Malaysian traditional dance, and many more.
Collaboration & Creation
I have worked with various artists across broad range of different genres. From dancers to musicians, from live performances to video shooting; you name it. Inevitably, the outcomes are not always favourable but it opens up new possibilities every single time.
Here, I would like to welcome any new opportunities and ideas for creative collaboration and exchange. So if you are looking for someone to explore new creations, then maybe you would like to give both of us a try by contacting me below.
